Tinted Mineral Sunscreen as a Foundation of Melasma and Pigmentation Care
For melasma and pigment-prone skin, sunscreen choice is not an afterthought. This guide explains the features I prioritize, practical examples and correct use.

The idea in one minute
For melasma and persistent pigmentation, my preferred starting point is a tinted mineral sunscreen rather than choosing a product on SPF number alone. The goal is strong UV protection plus additional visible-light protection.
Mineral sunscreens use filters such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Tinted formulas commonly add iron oxides, which are especially relevant when visible light contributes to persistent pigmentation.
The rule to remember: Mineral + Tinted + Iron Oxides.
Products I recommend
- ISDIN Eryfotona Ageless Tinted Mineral SPF 50.
- EltaMD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum SPF 41 Tinted.
- Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50.
Always check the exact local version and current ingredient list, because formulations can differ by market and change over time.
What I look for
- Mineral filters.
- A tinted formula.
- High protection, ideally SPF 50 or 50+.
- Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
- Iron oxides in the tint.
Why the tint matters
Visible light can contribute to pigmentation, particularly in pigment-prone and darker skin tones. Iron oxide pigments in tinted sunscreens add visible-light protection alongside ultraviolet protection.
How to use it
- Apply enough to cover the entire face and other exposed areas, not only the dark patches.
- Use it as the final step of the morning routine.
- Reapply with prolonged sun exposure and after heavy sweating, swimming or wiping the face.
Useful ingredients underneath
- Vitamin C for antioxidant support and uneven tone.
- Vitamin E or ferulic acid as additional antioxidant support.
- Niacinamide for barrier support and uneven pigmentation.
A simple routine you can repeat consistently is better than a crowded routine you cannot maintain.
Bottom line
Before adding another brightening product, make sure daily photoprotection is properly built. In my approach to melasma and persistent pigmentation, the foundation is a tinted mineral sunscreen with iron oxides used consistently and in an adequate amount.
