The Laser & Device Decision Map: Choose Technology by Target, Not Brand Name

CO₂, RF microneedling, IPL, vascular and pigment lasers are not interchangeable. This guide links the clinical problem to the tissue target and technology class.

Start with the chromophore or tissue target

Blood vessels, pigment, water in the skin and deeper tissue do not respond to energy in the same way. The right platform depends on target, depth, skin tone and acceptable downtime.

A quick technology map

  • Fractional CO₂: relatively strong resurfacing for selected scars, texture and wrinkles.
  • RF microneedling: thermal energy delivered through needles at controlled depths for texture, selected scars and mild laxity.
  • IPL: broad-spectrum light rather than one laser wavelength, used for selected pigment and vascular indications.
  • Vascular lasers: target hemoglobin for specific vessels and redness.
  • Pigment lasers: selected by pigment type, skin tone and post-inflammatory pigment risk.
A good device with poor settings or a poor diagnosis is still poor treatment.

Skin tone changes the safety margin

As post-inflammatory pigment risk increases, calibration, platform selection and test treatment in selected cases become more important. Stronger is not automatically smarter.

How should success be measured?

Measure the original problem: scar depth, redness, lesion count or texture quality. Do not use post-treatment redness or the advertised power of the machine as a proxy for success.
